What does the Kittenbot Meowbit have to offer – The Meowbit is a card-sized graphical retro game computer with allows you coding with Makecode arcade and Python. The Meowbit is a card-sized graphical programming video game console designed for kids of all ages.

The Kittenbot Meowbit comes with a 1.8′ full-color screen, 6 x programmable buttons, 1 x buzzer, built-in light sensor, temperature sensor, SD card slot (For external storage), multiplayer connector and edge connector. A special feature of the Meowbit is the in-built edge connector which should (**no extensive testing or certification of other 3rd party expansion boards has been conducted) ensure that the Meowbit pins is compatible with most micro:bit expansion boards out there. When combined with the Kittenbot Robot:bit board you have the ability to create a programmable versatile robot in a very short time. The Kittenbot Meowbit can also be used with the Kittenbot IoBit to create different electronics projects just like you would with the BBC Micro:Bit.

The Meowbit is a card-sized graphical programming video game console designed for kids of all ages. The Kittenbot Meowbit can be powered using an USB cable with a microUSB port.

The Kittenbot Meowbit comes with a 1.8′ full-color screen, 6 x programmable buttons, 1 x buzzer, built-in light sensor, temperature sensor, SD card slot (For external storage), multiplayer connector and edge connector. A special feature of the Meowbit is the in-built edge connector which should (**no extensive testing or certification of other 3rd party expansion boards has been conducted) ensure that the Meowbit pins is compatible with most micro:bit expansion boards out there. When combined with the Kittenbot Robot:bit board you have the ability to create a programmable versatile robot in a very short time. Please Note : The Kittenbot Meowbit does not come along with the IoBit v2.1,  IoBit v2.0 or a Lithium Ion Battery. Each of these items needs to be purchased separately.

Use the Kittenbot Meowbit to learn how to design games using Makecode Arcade (https://arcade.makecode.com) and also explore the fundamentals of programming with micropython. When combined with the Kittenbot Iobit (See below) you can connect other electronic components to the Meowbit and explore basics of electronics.

What are some of the main features of the Kittenbot Meowbit

  1. The Kittenbot Meowbit allows for learning through play. Design games, let your creativity run loose, create your own animations and learn how to code.
  2. Comes with a 160 x 128 full-color TFT LCD which provides a more vivid interactive interface.
  3. The Meowbit board comes along with a temperature sensor, Gyroscope which can be used to create interactive games.
  4. The board also has four buttons along with an on-board buzzer which are helpful in creating interactive games, animation.
  5. Kittenbot provides software tools to program the board using block based coding approaches including micropython.
  6. There is support for multi-platform development platforms including Makecode arcade, Kittenblock, scratch3.0, MicroPython; support multi-language.
  7. Kittenbot Meowbit supports charting and visualization of data in realtime, reviewing data captured by sensors and viewing of charts on the screen in real-time.
  8. Very important and useful is the fact that the pins of the Kittenbot Meowbit are compatible with those of the BBC micro:bit. So you should be able to reuse your BBC micro:bit adapters/add-on boards with the Meowbit.

The Kittenbot Meowbit is quite a powerful programmable computer that can be programmed using both Makecode Arcade (Block based coding platform) including micropython. It also allows you to re-use any other BBC micro:bit addons you might have invested in. Combined with the Iobit v2.0 or the Robobit 2.1 you can further extend the capability of the Kittenbot Meowbit.

Here’s the pinout diagram for the Kittenbot Meowbit. The Kittenbot Meowbit goldfinger pins are compatible with the BBC micro:bit i.e. you should be able to use (most of) the BBC micro:bit addons/adapters you’ve purchased with the Kittenbot Meowbit. We haven’t performed any extensive testing as such and this statement is based on the information provided by the manufacturer i.e. Kittenbot.

How do we program the Kittenbot Meowbit : The Kittenbot Meowbit can be programmed using either the Makecode Arcade Block Editor, using Javascript within the Makecode Arcade editor, using the Mu Python editor or using Kittenblock (Based on Scratch 3.0) or using the Kblock app. You can find each of these options listed at the Kittenbot Software Download website.

Let’s look at each of the programming platforms very briefly –

  1. The Block Editor is a visual editor and provides an introduction to structured programming via drag and drop coding blocks that snap together. You can also convert a Block Editor script into Javascript which helps with the transition to text-based programming. Find out more at the Makecode Arcade website.
  2. For those who have been working on Block based programming for a while and are considering moving to Javascript, the Makecode Arcade development platform offers you the flexibility to write code in Javascript too. In-fact all the block based code that you write can be directly translated to Javascript. Javascript is also back in popularity as a web programming language for development of interactive websites.   3. You can also use Kittenblock which is a block based programming language based on Scratch 3.0.   4. MicroPython is a completely text-based programming language, perfect for those who want to push their coding skills further.
