What is the service being delivered – At OzToyLib we are educators at heart. As part of the learning session we will cover off the following topics –

  2. Setting up the Arduino IDE on your computer
  3. Learning howto program the Arduino
  4. Code your first few programs – Hello world, Blinking the on-board LED
  5. Blinking an external LED with the Arduino (This requires you to purchase a suitable electronics starter kit from OzToyLib.com.au)
  6. Helping you chart out next steps with your STEM Learning Journey

What is the Arduino – Arduino is an open-source hardware and software company, project and user community that designs and manufactures single-board micro-controllers and micro-controller kits for building digital devices. Its products are licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) or the GNU General Public License (GPL),permitting the manufacture of Arduino boards and software distribution by anyone. Arduino boards are available commercially in pre-assembled form or as do-it-yourself (DIY) kits.  Arduino board designs use a variety of microprocessors and controllers. The boards are equipped with sets of digital and analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various expansion boards or breadboards (shields) and other circuits. The boards feature serial communications interfaces, including Universal Serial Bus (USB) on some models, which are also used for loading programs from personal computers. The micro-controllers can be programmed using C, C++ programming languages including block based IDE’s. In addition to using traditional compiler tool-chains, the Arduino project provides an integrated development environment (IDE) based on the Processing language project.

What is the Arduino UNO – The Arduino UNO is an open-source micro-controller board based on the Microchip ATmega328P micro-controller and developed by Arduino.cc. The board is equipped with sets of digital and analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various expansion boards (shields) and other circuits. The orignal board has 14 Digital pins, 6 Analog pins, and programmable with the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment) via a type B USB cable. It can be powered by a USB cable or by an external 9 volt battery, though it accepts voltages between 7 and 20 volts. “Uno” means one in Italian and was chosen to mark the release of Arduino Software (IDE) 1.0.The Uno board is the first in a series of USB Arduino boards, and the reference model for the Arduino platform. The ATmega328 on the Arduino Uno comes pre-programmed with a boot-loader that allows uploading new code to it without the use of an external hardware programmer.

What kits will we base our learning around and how do we choose them – Every learning requirement is unique. Our approach to training involves working with the student to understand his/her current background, their understanding of the subject at hand, experience with the relevant tools/platform, their learning objectives including preference for learning approach i.e. hands on learning, learning through seeing others work, etc.  Based on our understanding of the different parameters we work with the student to identify a suitable learning approach. Where a kit is required (electronics, robotics, etc.) we will work with the student to help identify a suitable learning kit. All our kits are sourced from our store i.e. www.OzToyLib.com.au. Our experience working with kids, parents over the years gives us the ability to help map suitable learning options, approaches, learning platforms to students learning requirements and outcomes.

How will the service be delivered – These sessions are all designed to be 1 on 1 where the mentor and student sit together, working through the topics at hand i.e. coding, electronics, robotics, etc. You are not purchasing access to group sessions, so please do not expect group tutoring since our current delivery model does not cater for that. Write to us separately at support@oztoylib.com.au for group tutoring requests. See below for additional details –

  1. If you are Melbourne based, we will travel to where you are located.
  2. Please note – When working with kids <16 yrs, it is mandatory that a parent is present in the room all times during the session.
  3. If you live in Victoria but are more than an hours commute away from Melbourne we have a couple of options. We can agree to meet somewhere around Melbourne, at a place that’s convenient to you or we could conduct our sessions over Skype/Google Hangouts.
  4. For those living outside of Melbourne we will deliver the sessions using Skype/ Google Hangouts (preferred).
