What is the 1.8in LCD Display for BBC micro:bit – A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly, instead using a backlight or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome. LCDs are available to display arbitrary images  or fixed images with low information content, which can be displayed or hidden, such as preset words, digits, and seven-segment displays, as in a digital clock. They use the same basic technology, except that arbitrary images are made up of a large number of small pixels, while other displays have larger elements.

What are some of the main features of the1.8in LCD display board for the BBC micro:bit – Here’s a list of the key features of the board –

  1. Comes with an inbuilt micro:bit edge connector so that you can connect the micro:bit directly to this servo board
  2. Embedded driver ST7735S, supports 65K colors
  3. Onboard SRAM 23LC1024, used as display cache, no more out of memory
  4. SPI interface, takes up only a few IO pins
  5. Backlight adjustment via PWM
  6. Reserved solder pads for control interface, make it easy to connect with Arduino/Nucleo boards
  7. Comes with development resources (micro:bit graphical demo/user manual, etc.)

How do we program the BBC micro:bit and the 1.8in LCD board: The LCD board when used with a BBC micro:bit can be programmed using either the Makecode Block Editor, using Javascript within the Makecode editor or even using the Mu Python editor. Let’s look at each of the programming platforms very briefly –

  1. The Block Editor is a visual editor and provides an introduction to structured programming via drag and drop coding blocks that snap together. You can also convert a Block Editor script into Javascript which helps with the transition to text-based programming. Find out more at the Makecode for BBC micro:bit website.
  2. For those who have been working on Block based programming for a while and are considering moving to Javascript, the Makecode Arcade development platform offers you the flexibility to write code in Javascript too. In-fact all the block based code that you write can be directly translated to Javascript. Javascript is also back in popularity as a web programming language for development of interactive websites.   3. MicroPython is a completely text-based editor, perfect for those who want to push their coding skills further.
