What is NCSS Summer School – The National Computer Science School (NCSS) is a ten day summer school for students going into years 11 and 12. NCSS brings together talented young people from around Australia for an intensive course of computer programming and website development at university. NCSS 2020 will run from Friday 3rd to Sunday 12th January 2020 (inclusive), and is being run at the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne (likely).
NCSS is organized by the Australian Computing Academy at the University of Sydney. The school is completely residential, with all students staying with NCSS staff in full-board accommodation provided on campus. Applications close 18th October 2019.

Who is NCSS – The National Computer Science School (NCSS) provides quality educational opportunities for Australian high school students to learn computer-programming skills. The aim is to attract students into considering the career choice offered by studying an ICT related subject at University. Working with industrial sponsors NCSS provides students with an opportunity to visualize a path to interesting programming-related careers in engineering and computer science. NCSS is run by the University of Sydney with strong sponsorship from both industry and government.

What happens at NCSS – NCSS is about challenging students to think like computer scientists and providing an intensive programming experience in a university setting. As part of the program, students will go on industry site visits and meet industry professionals in a variety of contexts, including talks, competitions and meals. In 2018, NCSS students visited Atlassian, Freelancer, Commonwealth Bank and WiseTech Global.
The main activity for the week is the creation of software to implement a social networking site. Social and teamwork games are included in the relaxation periods, as well as scheduled free time in Sydney. All NCSS students reside at a residential college on campus. The majority of students are housed in single rooms, occasionally students may be housed in same sex twin rooms. NCSS tutors reside at the same residential college, and provide pastoral care for the duration of NCSS.
