Giving Our Kids STEM Skills For Survival In the Digital Age

What the heck is STEM – STEM education involves the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in an interdisciplinary or integrated approach. STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons. Students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between the classroom and the world around them.

STEM education typically focuses on project-based learning in the classroom. The projects and activities incorporate different aspects of STEM learning emphasize the application of science and prepare students with digital skills for the future. By developing curiosity and knowledge of STEM disciplines students make connections and see the relevance for future career pathways.

Importance of the STEM for survival in our digital age – Here’s what the Western Australian Department of Education website has to say about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), “The global economy is changing at a very fast pace. Current jobs are disappearing due to automation and new jobs are emerging every day as a result of technological advances. The continual advances in technology are changing the way students learn, connect and interact every day. Skills developed by students through STEM provide them with the foundation to succeed at school and beyond.

Employer demand for STEM qualifications and skills is high, and will continue to increase in the future. Currently, 75 per cent of jobs in the fastest growing industries require workers with STEM skills. To be competitive, the Australian workforce needs people who can adapt to a changing workplace. STEM empowers individuals with the skills to succeed and adapt to this changing world.

STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including:

  1. Problem solving
  2. Creativity
  3. critical analysis
  4. Teamwork
  5. Independent thinking
  6. Initiative
  7. Communication
  8. Digital literacy.
Why STEM Matters (Department of Education, Western Australia)

What does it mean to have STEM skills – It’s now an accepted fact that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills are important for survival in our digital age. So then we should be asking ourselves the questions, what does it really mean to have relevant STEM skills. STEM skills can mean different things to different people, depending on which STEM career you are considering or which STEM professional you might be speaking with. STEM does bring to the table a lot of relevant technical skills however at its core STEM skills give your child (and yourself) the following –

  1. Computational thinking skills
  2. Problem solving skills
  3. Logical thinking and reasoning skills
  4. Critical thinking skills
  5. Ability to learn from failure and continue iterating.

Yes, there are many different aspects of STEM which are very technical. However, not everyone who works with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) ends up being a programmer, a robotics engineer or a scientist. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) is very diverse, has many different applications and offers many different possibilities with growing number of career options. Check out the Careers With STEM website to learn more about potential career options within STEM.

How difficult is it to get started with STEM learning – Getting yourself or your child started with their STEM learning journey isn’t very complex and shouldn’t cost you much.
